How we use SMART

SMART is used at more than 1,100 sites in over 95 countries to support a broad range of conservation management activities, including biodiversity conservation, law enforcement, tourism and visitor management, natural resources use, intelligence, and performance and threat level assessments.

SMART can be customised to suit specific needs and contexts. Whether in terrestrial or marine environments, at connected or disconnected sites, SMART enables users to monitor and evaluate conservation efforts in order to improve conservation management.

By providing rapid access to accurate data and analysis, SMART helps managers and frontline workers minimize threats to wildlife and conservation areas.

PROTECTED AREA MANAGEMENT
SMART’s structure is customisable, flexible, and scalable, allowing users to design their own templates to manage all aspects of their conservation areas. From strict protection to sustainable use, from terrestrial to marine and freshwater, SMART’s data model, queries, and reports can be customised to meet your particular management needs, whether at a single site or an entire network of sites. LAW ENFORCEMENT MONITORING
SMART enables the collection, storage, communication, and evaluation of data on patrol efforts, patrol results, and threat levels. SMART has enhanced law enforcement effectiveness, improved morale of protection teams, and reduced threats to wildlife and other natural resources at numerous sites across the world. When effectively employed to create and sustain information flow between rangers and conservation managers, SMART can substantially improve protection of wildlife and their habitats.

BIODIVERSITY MONITORING
SMART tools allow users to capture, manage and map data from systematic surveys of species and their habitats. This information can be analyzed to understand species and habitat changes over space and time, as well as understand factors responsible for the changes. Through the Survey plugin, SMART streamlines the collection of ecological data with a customizable data model that can be used for a variety of commonly applied field survey methods.

With SMART Survey, you can:

• Organize, map, and summarize ecological data and easily export for external analysis
• Compile ecological and patrol data from your site(s) to create a holistic protected area management strategy

CITIZEN SCIENCE
SMART Collect, a version of SMART Mobile, facilitates 'decentralized' data collection, such as for citizen science and community reporting projects. Data collectors can download SMART on their personal devices (e.g., via the App or Play Stores) to assist with a range of use cases including:
- Fishermen reporting catch or illegal fishing
- Citizen science in and around Conservation Areas
- Reporting human-wildlife conflict in a village
- Tracking of small-scale fishing boat
- Reporting wildlife crime

INTELLIGENCE
Addressing the threats facing species and protected areas requires great depth and breadth of knowledge about the environment, human populations and their interrelationships. SMART Profiles is a versatile plug-in designed to do just that. It was built to track individual entities in time and space, and to capture the relationships between entities. This can be applied to any number of scenarios:

  • recording sightings and developing a profile of individual animals

  • tracking the traffic patterns through park entry points

  • recording the details of outreach projects in neighbouring communities

  • maintaining records of staff participation in training events

  • managing the maintenance schedules for equipment and infrastructure

  • tracking incidences of human- wildlife conflict around protected areas.

SMART Profiles allow for the management of information on entities and their interrelationships in fluid circumstances, where reality, and our understanding of it evolve.
